Bob White Covered Bridge was built in 1921 and served as a connection between Route 8 and the Smith River Church of the Brethren. The Bob White Covered Bridge was designed and built by Walter Weaver and is an 80 foot, trussed construction. The bridge can be reached by traveling 1.5 miles south on Route 8, east one mile on Route 618 to Route 869, then south one-tenth of a mile.

The Bull Mountain Forest Fire Lookout Tower in Patrick County was originally a wooden structure built in 1943 for the Virginia Forest Service (VDF). It was replaced by the current 60ft Aermotor tower with 7ftx 7ft metal cab in 1949, and a one-room ground residence cabin was added in 1950.

Located on U. S. Route 58, at an elevation of 2930 feet, Fred Clifton Park provides breathtaking views of the northern Blue Ridge as well as access to a ridge top forest. A densely wooded area of oaks, maples and sassafras surrounds the picnic and parking areas. This area holds red-eyed vireo, wood thrush, northern cardinal and American goldfinch and in May and September, can support a high diversity of migrant cuckoos, thrushes, vireos, warblers, tanagers and grosbeaks. Butterflies can be found cruising through the picnic area at any time of day, with spicebush swallowtail being especially prevalent. Lovers Leap Scenic Overlook is located adjacent to the park.

Birthplace and childhood home of the famous Confederate cavalry general J.E.B. Stuart whose cavalry exploits earned him the nickname of the "eyes" of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Formerly known as Taylorville in honor of George Taylor, Stuart was renamed in honor of JEB Stuart. Laurel Hill has hiking trails including a part of the old railroad bed known as the "Dinky"---Mount Airy & Eastern Railroad. There is also a slave cemetery on site. There are visual plaques to show you where the house and kitchen once stood as well as the Native American site. An annual Civil War Encampment is held there each year.

Mayo River Trail has just been constructed in downtown Stuart, VA, just off Commerce Street following the path of the Danville and Western Railway ("Dick and Willie"). This trail is good for walking and bycycling. It has an asphalt smooth level surface. The trail also follows the Mayo River with an additional spur leading to the Landmark Assisted Living Center.

Historic Spencer Penn Centre was formed in 2004 as an education and special events center when the community bought the property after the closing of the public school. Since that time, renovations have brought the property up to modern day standards, while maintaining the historic integrity. Hardin William Reynolds and his wife Nancy Jane Cox Reynolds built an elegant, two-story brick home on Rock Spring Plantation near the village of Critz in 1843. Their son R. J. Reynolds, founder of the well known tobacco company, was born here in 1850. Civil War veteran, Major A. D. Reynolds, the father of the founder of Reynolds Metals Company, was born here also along with 14 other children. The original 19th century home, restored in 1970, has been designated a state and national historic landmark. The grounds include both a family cemetery and one of the few marked cemeteries of slaves and their descendants. A modern Continuing Education Center, operated by Virginia Tech, hosts a variety of cultural and educational activities throughout the year. A Virginia Tech Forest Research Center is located on the 717-acre property also.

The Virginia Motorsports Museum and Hall of Fame currently has a liquor still that was seized in Patrick County in December of 1996. WILLIS GAP COMMUNITY CENTER OPEN JAM: EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm. Mr. Otto Hiatt and his wife, Nellie, started the jam at his home. It got so large that he rented the Community Building on a Friday night. That was the beginning of the Open Jam. The Willis Gap Community Center has been jamming for over 22 years, located at 144 The Hollow Road, Ararat, Patrick County VA. 24053. It is a few miles from Meadows of Dan (Primland), a few miles from The Blue Ridge Parkway (Mabry's Mill), a few miles from Mount Airy, NC (Mayberry) Andy Griffith's home town. The kitchen opens at 6:30 pm with hotdogs, chips, dessert, coffee, sodas. Music (acoustic instruments) all ages welcome, Musicians/Singers/Guests, and dancing from 7 until 10 pm.
