Stokes Arts to host artist Sharon Grubbs with the Faces of Stokes County

Mar 1-31

The Stokes County Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of “Faces of Stokes Arts,” an exhibit of original paintings by Sharon Grubbs in the Apple Gallery. A reception is scheduled for Sunday, March 8, 2026, from 3:00-5:00pm at the Stokes County Arts Council 500 Main Street, Danbury, NC. The individuals featured in this portrait project were chosen by the Stokes County Arts Council for the lasting contributions they have made to the cultural life of the county as Stokes Arts recently celebrated their 50th Anniversary. Each subject represents a different way the arts have been nurtured here—through education, performance, leadership, volunteerism, and steadfast advocacy. Together, they reflect a shared commitment to creativity, community, and opportunity. Grubbs shared: “Meeting each of them, listening to their stories, and spending time in conversation was a genuine joy. As they spoke about the Arts Council, there was an unmistakable emotion—passion, gratitude, pride, and love—that surfaced again and again. It was my hope, as I painted them, to capture not only a likeness, but that spirit: the warmth, the dedication, and the deep appreciation they carried for what the Arts Council has meant in their lives and in the lives of others.” This exhibit will be on display February 19-March 31, 2026, in the Apple Gallery. The Stokes County Arts Council is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm, Saturday, 10:00a.m.-5:00p.m. and Sunday 12:00pm-5:00pm. For additional information about the exhibit, please contact the Stokes County Arts Council at (336) 593-8159 or visit www.stokesarts.org.

Jealousy, greed, and competition often led to feuds, brawls, and even killings. "Moonshine Murders" reveals the events which sparked a number of these murders. Learn how to make a functional, hand whisk broom with Erin Simons of Laurel Ridge Studios. In this workshop you will learn traditional broom making techniques required to craft one turkey wing whisk broom and one cake tester. Crafted to create a fan shape, Turkey Wing Whisks are great tools for cleaning all types of areas: desks, kitchen tables, workbenches, fireplaces, and more! Cake Testers are made from the cut off, so that no material is wasted. Broomcorn, a variety of sorghum, is the essential natural material for household cleaning because it is delicate enough to catch hair and smaller debris while being strong enough to bend without breaking. We will discuss broom folklore, history, and care for longevity. * Please keep in mind, broom making requires manual dexterity in both hands and feet. Participants should feel comfortable using a blunt knife and lighter. This workshop is considered beginner to medium level friendly and is for participants 13 and older. People Incorporated Receives $300,000 To Support Women-Owned Businesses

Normally occurs in June

People Incorporated Financial Services has been awarded $300,000 through the Commonwealth’s Capital for Communities Fund (CCCF) to support and empower women entrepreneurs with accessible financial products and coaching. Funding will also support existing business lending and technical assistance across the agency’s 16 city and county service area. “This funding allows us to expand access to much-needed capital to historically underserved populations, including women-owned businesses and low-income community members,” said People Incorporated Director of Community Economic Development Stephanie Lillard. “Women entrepreneurs continue to face barriers to capital needed to grow or start their businesses, and we hope this funding will help break down walls and support the start-up and expansion of women-owned businesses across the commonwealth.” The Federal Reserve’s 2022 Small Business Credit Survey showed that women-owned businesses frequently encounter barriers to obtaining capital to support and grow their businesses. People Incorporated established People Incorporated Financial Services in 2000 to meet the financing needs of disadvantaged individuals and entrepreneurs in Southwest Virginia and has since expanded to serve the Northern Piedmont, Northern Shenandoah Valley and Greater Prince William regions with its loan products and financial services. People Incorporated is proud to be the only Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) headquartered in Southwest Virginia. Normally occurs in August

Stokes Arts to host artist Sharon Grubbs with the Faces of Stokes County

Feb 19 - Mar 31
