Fairy Stone Hunt, July 9th through July 30th, 2024. Daily hunts, times vary. Learn the legend behind the naturally occurring stone cross formations, and travel to the special location in the park to search for your own "fairy stone." After a short presentation on what you will be looking for, we will travel to the site. Guests will need to drive their own vehicles to the hunt site.

Murders over moonshine rocked the town of Fayerdale in the 1920s and 30s, leaving a dying town remembered for tragedy rather than the mining operations that once made it a boomtown. Moonshining (illegal whiskey making) was quite prevalent in and around the Fairy Stone State Park area in the early 1900s. Jealousy, greed, and competition often led to feuds, brawls, and even killings. "Moonshine Murders" reveals the events which sparked a number of these murders. Due to the gruesome nature of this topic, the program is recommended for ages 16 and older.

Walk in the footsteps of moonshiners of decades gone by. Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills as we explore the fascinating, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities. Guests will meet an interpreter at the Visitor Center then drive to the hike location.

Join us every second Saturday at the Mayo River Trails to explore the future Mayo River State Park. You will also discover some interesting facts about local wildlife, the history of the Native Americans who inhabited the area, and about the exploration of the area by William Byrd.
We will alternate monthly between the Redbud Trail and the Mayo River Trail, so hiking times will vary. The Redbud Trail is approximately two miles long. The Mayo River Trail, plus Byrd's Loop, is approximately four miles long.

Patrick County History Program Part One Program and Book Release For Perry Family Scholarship on July 28 at 2 p.m. at the Ararat Ruritan Building, 4711 Ararat Highway, Ararat, Virginia. Beverly Belcher Woody writes a weekly article for Patrick County’s newspaper The Enterprise. She will be talking about people and places in the Ararat area from her book Patrick Pioneers Part One. This is a fund raiser for the Perry Family Scholarship that gives a Patrick County High School Senior from the Dan River District a $500 scholarship for college after they write a 1,000 word essay about the historical topic of their choosing. Admission is free and donations will be accepted to the Perry Family Scholarship, which was started to honor Erie Meredith and Betty Hobbs Perry, parents of Historian and Author Thomas D. “Tom” Perry, and has given away eight scholarships totaling $3,500. The Community Engagement Center will be closed from July 22 through August for maintenance. Staff will work remotely and will continue to be available via email or telephone. Updates on reopening will be communicated via social media and email.
The historic home is also undergoing maintenance, but the weekend tour schedule will not be impacted, and our docents will be on site each Sunday from 1 to 4 PM for guided tours.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: We’re so excited to include on the label of The Buffalo a piece from local artist Raven Skye McDonough depicting a majestic, bold and colorful buffalo. These characteristics along with our proximity to Buffalo Mountain, made the artwork a natural fit for our wine bottle. Raven will display some of her other art pieces in our tasting room and will also be onsite from 12-3 pm on August 10th to meet/greet and autograph some bottles. Word on the street is there may even be a new poster of the art available for purchase and signings.

Fairy Stone State Park will host the Moonshine Hollow Hike. Walk in the footsteps of moonshiners of decades gone by. Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills and learn about the very interesting, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities -- Fridays, 10 a.m. at the Fairy Stone State Park Visitor Center. Guests will meet an interpreter at the Visitor Center then drive to the hike location. This hike is over steep, uneven terrain and is difficult. Piedmont Community services is hosting our Annual Recovery Month Celebration on September 7th, 2024. This year we are going to be at the Dehart Park, located at 212 Wood Brothers Dr. Stuart, Va. 24171.
The event will be held at our regular time from 10 am till 2pm. The office of Recovery Services had created the theme of “Peers Soar in 2024”. We want to embrace this theme by showing our community the power of people on their journey through recovery. This event is an opportunity for anyone to come enjoy a family friendly event and get access to free local resources while playing games, eating lunch, joining activities, and hearing speakers share their experiences. To keep the tradition going, we will also host the “walk for hope”. The community can use the pathway to dedicate their walk to a friend or loved one.
In the coming weeks will be reaching out to various organizations regarding their participation in the event. If you already have plans to join us as a vendor/Volunteer, you can complete the vendor form that is attached to this email and send it back to Kat Heredia, who’s contact info can be found at the bottom of the sheet. We will be sending out messages in the future with the official flier to spread the word to our areas. I would encourage you to share that with anyone in your respective area. Even if you can't volunteer or have a table, please consider coming on Sept 7th to show your support.
If you want to be a vendor here are some important things to know:
There is no charge to participate
You can promote organizations or have items that are for sale. Either is fine
You will need to provide your own table, tent and chairs on Sept 7th.
Set up for vendors is 8:30-9:30 am. You are responsible for your own tare down between 2pm- 3pm.
Vendors have no limit on how many people they can bring with them.

Fairy Stone State Park will host the Moonshine Hollow Hike. Walk in the footsteps of moonshiners of decades gone by. Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills and learn about the very interesting, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities -- Fridays, 10 a.m. at the Fairy Stone State Park Visitor Center. While it may be futile to try to define Dangermuffin’s sound, it is possible to pinpoint the themes that inspire much of the band’s music, and perhaps no theme is as prominent and consistent as nature, including the ocean, the sun, and the mountains...all ancient and powerful and capable of immeasurable and profound healing. These ideas, running like threads through almost every Dangermuffin album, together form the basis of some of the band’s most deeply held principles and teachings: respect the earth, stay open to the universe, and strive for healing. According to lyricist Dan Lotti, if Dangermuffin’s music could accomplish just one thing, it would be to heal.
The vocal-centric songs are delivered both via acoustic string band arrangements (think Greensky Bluegrass) and a drum-fueled groovy & fiery jam-influenced arrangement (think Goose), often within the same show! Dirk Quinn is the guitarist for the jazz/funk band that coincidentally bears his name. Based out of Philadelphia, the group travels extensively throughout the US and Canada. Utilizing over a decade of steady performing, they've developed a unique and sincere style - one that appeals to a wide variety of music listeners with fans ranging from the beard stroking jazz aficionados to the jam band hippies.
The band’s infectious energy and musical interplay routinely attract listeners that are admittedly more accustomed to lyric-based music. A singer-songwriter born in Guam and raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia; Rebecca Porter continues to forge her way in country music with songs that balance her distinctive storytelling with the dynamics of her commanding voice in a unique display of soulful classic country.
?A lifelong innate connection to music guided Porter into performing live as a young adult. Through a decade’s worth of live performance with Harrisonburg-Rockingham County area musicians, Porter learned the ropes of life as a performing and recording artist. When her work in cover bands came to a pause after the birth of her first child, Porter found herself stumbling through parenting an infant during a global pandemic. The pandemic and motherhood left Porter yearning for the return to connection and music.
Porter transformed her pandemic loneliness into two EPs - “Prime Rainbow Conditions” and 2023’s “Queen of the Local”, the latter of which was successfully crowdfunded based on Porter's formidable regional power. Porter tours extensively around her home state of Virginia, and steadily increasing forays outside the state, commanding stages up and down the East Coast. With completely independent legwork, her EP is making rounds nationally and internationally. One Family Productions.

Winners of the 2021 MerleFest band competition, Into The Fog is a psychedelic jamgrass band from Raleigh, North Carolina that combines timeless songwriting with progressive instrumentation and tight harmonies. The group consists of Brian Stephenson (acoustic guitar), Winston Mitchell (mandolin), Derek Lane (upright bass), and Connor Kozlosky (electric guitar), with everyone contributing on vocals. The band’s members have varied musical backgrounds that range from bluegrass to funk, which helps create Into The Fog’s genre-jumping sound.
The band has released two studio albums and one live record, Volume One, which was released in 2023 and showcases their updated sound with Kozlosky. Live shows are a keystone of the Into The Fog experience, as the band expands songs to highlight their instrumental prowess and push the boundaries of the newgrass sound. The band is set to level up in 2024, with bigger headlining shows and a new album in the works.
Into The Fog has shared the stage with the likes of Sam Bush, Keller & the Keels, Town Mountain, Daniel Donato, Jon Stickley Trio, Big Richard, and The Grass is Dead, while hitting festivals like FloydFest, Rooster Walk, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Earl Scruggs Music Fest, The Big What?, Front Porch Fest, as well as being Official Showcase artists at IBMA in 2023. Fairy Stone State Park will host the Moonshine Hollow Hike. Walk in the footsteps of moonshiners of decades gone by. Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills and learn about the very interesting, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities -- Fridays, 10 a.m. at the Fairy Stone State Park Visitor Center. Guests will meet an interpreter at the Visitor Center then drive to the hike location. This hike is over steep, uneven terrain and is difficult. The Stuart Farmers' Market will begin market hours of operation for 2024 on Friday's, 8 am to 12 pm, May through November. The season will officially kick off on Friday, May 3. Vendors will be on site Friday, April 26 with what we call "sneak peek Fridays." Cool season crops, along with baked items, coffee and crafts will be available. Come shop with us! Also, the Patrick County Master Gardeners will be on site the last Friday of each month with information and to answer gardening questions. As we reach the halfway point in our Spring session of College for Older Adults, we reflect on the many great classes we have been fortunate to attend. The Cooking Up Culture class featuring Chef Rod Perrino has cooked up some amazing meals while Andrea Morrison’s class painted beautiful burlap bags to take home. On Tuesdays, Tim Smith has been teaching us all the interesting history of the Greeks and Romans and in the afternoon we have been learning all about the Civil Rights Movement. The hiking class has seen some beautiful scenery as they travel around our area while our Friday fun trips to the Taubman Art Museum and the International Civil Rights Center have been very informative.
But the fun hasn’t ended! We have some very fun and interesting classes and trips in the next few weeks. Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills and learn about the very interesting, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities -- Fridays, 10 a.m. at the Fairy Stone State Park Visitor Center. Guests will meet an interpreter at the Visitor Center then drive to the hike location. This hike is over steep, uneven terrain and is difficult. The National Park Service (NPS) will issue a prospectus for the solicitation of offers for a 10-year concession contracts to provide for Food & Beverage and Retail Services at Mabry Mill within Blue Ridge Parkway.
