The Bull Mountain Forest Fire Lookout Tower in Patrick County was originally a wooden structure built in 1943 for the Virginia Forest Service (VDF). It was replaced by the current 60’ Aermotor tower with 7’ x 7’ metal cab in 1949, and a one-room ground residence cabin was added in 1950.
In 1989 the site -- now an emergency lookout -- was dedicated to Virginia Governor Gerald L. Baliles, who grew up near the tower and visited it many times in his youth.
The Bull Mt. fire tower is on the NATIONAL HISTORIC LOOKOUT REGISTER.
