Sep 7

Piedmont Community services is hosting our Annual Recovery Month Celebration on September 7th, 2024. This year we are going to be at the Dehart Park, located at 212 Wood Brothers Dr. Stuart, Va. 24171. The event will be held at our regular time from 10 am till 2pm. The office of Recovery Services had created the theme of “Peers Soar in 2024”. We want to embrace this theme by showing our community the power of people on their journey through recovery. This event is an opportunity for anyone to come enjoy a family friendly event and get access to free local resources while playing games, eating lunch, joining activities, and hearing speakers share their experiences. To keep the tradition going, we will also host the “walk for hope”. The community can use the pathway to dedicate their walk to a friend or loved one. In the coming weeks will be reaching out to various organizations regarding their participation in the event. If you already have plans to join us as a vendor/Volunteer, you can complete the vendor form that is attached to this email and send it back to Kat Heredia, who’s contact info can be found at the bottom of the sheet. We will be sending out messages in the future with the official flier to spread the word to our areas. I would encourage you to share that with anyone in your respective area. Even if you can't volunteer or have a table, please consider coming on Sept 7th to show your support. If you want to be a vendor here are some important things to know: There is no charge to participate You can promote organizations or have items that are for sale. Either is fine You will need to provide your own table, tent and chairs on Sept 7th. Set up for vendors is 8:30-9:30 am. You are responsible for your own tare down between 2pm- 3pm. Funding will also support existing business lending and technical assistance across the agency’s 16 city and county service area. “This funding allows us to expand access to much-needed capital to historically underserved populations, including women-owned businesses and low-income community members,” said People Incorporated Director of Community Economic Development Stephanie Lillard. “Women entrepreneurs continue to face barriers to capital needed to grow or start their businesses, and we hope this funding will help break down walls and support the start-up and expansion of women-owned businesses across the commonwealth.” The Federal Reserve’s 2022 Small Business Credit Survey showed that women-owned businesses frequently encounter barriers to obtaining capital to support and grow their businesses. People Incorporated established People Incorporated Financial Services in 2000 to meet the financing needs of disadvantaged individuals and entrepreneurs in Southwest Virginia and has since expanded to serve the Northern Piedmont, Northern Shenandoah Valley and Greater Prince William regions with its loan products and financial services. People Incorporated is proud to be the only Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) headquartered in Southwest Virginia. Dangermuffin at The Historic Star Theatre

Oct 12

October 12, 2024 - 7:00 PM 10:00 PM -- Historic Star Theatre. While it may be futile to try to define Dangermuffin’s sound, it is possible to pinpoint the themes that inspire much of the band’s music, and perhaps no theme is as prominent and consistent as nature, including the ocean, the sun, and the mountains...all ancient and powerful and capable of immeasurable and profound healing. These ideas, running like threads through almost every Dangermuffin album, together form the basis of some of the band’s most deeply held principles and teachings: respect the earth, stay open to the universe, and strive for healing. According to lyricist Dan Lotti, if Dangermuffin’s music could accomplish just one thing, it would be to heal. The vocal-centric songs are delivered both via acoustic string band arrangements (think Greensky Bluegrass) and a drum-fueled groovy & fiery jam-influenced arrangement (think Goose), often within the same show! For the band and fans alike, this has led to some of Dangermuffin’s most inspired, exciting, and surprising performances of its career. One Family Productions. October 12, doors: 7pm, music: 8pm Tickets are $20 in adv, $25 at the door. Tickets coming soon.

Rebecca Porter and The Rhinestone Roses at The Historic Star Theatre

Nov 9

November 9, 2024 - 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM - The Historic Start Theatre. A singer-songwriter born in Guam and raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia; Rebecca Porter continues to forge her way in country music with songs that balance her distinctive storytelling with the dynamics of her commanding voice in a unique display of soulful classic country. ?A lifelong innate connection to music guided Porter into performing live as a young adult. Through a decade’s worth of live performance with Harrisonburg-Rockingham County area musicians, Porter learned the ropes of life as a performing and recording artist. When her work in cover bands came to a pause after the birth of her first child, Porter found herself stumbling through parenting an infant during a global pandemic. The pandemic and motherhood left Porter yearning for the return to connection and music. Porter transformed her pandemic loneliness into two EPs - “Prime Rainbow Conditions” and 2023’s “Queen of the Local”, the latter of which was successfully crowdfunded based on Porter's formidable regional power. Porter tours extensively around her home state of Virginia, and steadily increasing forays outside the state, commanding stages up and down the East Coast. With completely independent legwork, her EP is making rounds nationally and internationally. One Family Productions. November 9, doors: 7pm, music: 8pm Tickets are 10 in adv, $12 at the door. Tickets coming soon.

People Incorporated Receives $300,000 To Support Women-Owned Businesses

Normally occurs in June

People Incorporated Financial Services has been awarded $300,000 through the Commonwealth’s Capital for Communities Fund (CCCF) to support and empower women entrepreneurs with accessible financial products and coaching. Stokes Arts to host exhibit of original art by Hillary Norman in the Apple Gallery

Aug 16 - Sep 30

The Stokes County Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibit of original art by Hillary Norman in the Apple Gallery. A reception is scheduled for Sunday, August 25 from 3:30pm-5:00pm in the Apple Gallery of the Stokes County Arts Council 500 Main Street Danbury, NC. Norman works primarily in oils and water-soluble oils and occasionally in acrylics. She explained that she loves the extended blending time that is afforded by oil-based media in general, as well as the depth of color and translucent layering. Traditional oils give longer time to dry and glaze beautifully in translucent layers whereas water soluble oils dry a little faster which allows her to keep with the momentum she can get when she starts a new piece. Norman is a Self-taught painter. She studied Art History and Economics at Duke University and Furniture Design and Industrial Design at S.C.A.D. Norman described her work in this exhibit as VIBRANT | ELEMENTAL | SURREAL | INTRICATE | EXISTENTIAL | FUTURE FORWARD. She shared: “We descend from generations who lived in a world in which people changed faster than the world. Individuals were the agents of change. Now we live in a world in which change happens faster in the world than it can in most individuals. We must learn a new kind of personal evolution to survive. What breaks down our norms and beliefs about self is merely creating raw materials for the future self to use in our collective remaking.” Norman said that she feels, both individually and collectively, that we are experiencing a paradigm shift in the world. The small changes in her own life parallel the large changes in the zeitgeist. “This Aquarian Age disruption will either break you or teach you. I choose to learn, to shift, to reinvent,” Norman explained. Norman described that her art is always shifting lenses, from macro to micro: zooming in and out on reality in an attempt to find beauty in the weird, the real, and the unreal. Norman stated: “Art takes me places outside my mind. It is a reservoir of my own psyche: each piece takes on the tone of my shifting mind states. Inspired heavily by surrealism, cubism, and abstract expressionism, I aim to bring the subconscious world to light in my art. Half process-oriented, half experimental, my work has a lot of range. However, the underlying thread is my desire to tease apart the seams of reality and reveal a deeper truth of being in painted form. I Norman is a freelance CRO consultant by day; she works in the space of optimizing e-commerce websites when she is not painting, making jewelry, writing, running or practicing Muay Thai. This exhibit will be on display August 16-September 30, 2024 in the Apple Gallery. The Stokes County Arts Council is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm, Saturday, 10:00a.m.-6:00p.m. and Sunday 12:00pm-6:00pm. Normally occurs in August

People Incorporated Financial Services has been awarded $300,000 through the Commonwealth’s Capital for Communities Fund (CCCF) to support and empower women entrepreneurs with accessible financial products and coaching.
