The Stokes County Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibit of original art
by Sarah Schwalm in the Apple Gallery. A meet and greet is scheduled for Friday, January 30th,
2026 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Stokes County Arts Council 500 Main Street Danbury, NC.
Schwalm grew up in eastern Michigan. She spent early childhood drawing and painting as well
as pursuing other creative venues in music and culinary arts. She shared that her dad taught her
how to be creative on paper, and her mom taught her how to be creative in the kitchen, while
also providing opportunities for her to pursue her art and other interests.
Schwalm works in acrylic, colored pencil, and watercolor pencil media. She began exploring
watercolor painting as a child and developed her skills with acrylic painting in college.
Schwalm said: “I grew up in the country and always loved animals, so combining both of those
themes in art is my passion. I also love adding a bit of fantasy to my artwork, being creative is
such an outlet for me.”
Schwalm is an award-winning artist. She placed third in the Tauni De Leseps Art Contest at
Palm Beach Atlantic University in 2019. She then placed first in 2020 and 2021.
Along with painting, Schwalm has continued her interest in culinary arts as well. She runs a
baking blog and Instagram called “Feed Your Soul Sari.”
Schwalm currently lives with her husband, Manny, in Winston Salem, and their two dogs, Benji
and Piper.
This exhibit will be on display January 2-February 15, 2026 in the Apple Gallery. The Stokes

This eight-week series is led by professional actor and director Peter Holland and is open to adults and youth ages ten and up. The course is designed to teach stage basics, develop fundamental skills, and promote confidence and creative expression.
Participants in Working Class Acting will explore essential elements of stagecraft and performance, including character development, scene work, voice and movement fundamentals, and collaborative ensemble practices. Classes are structured to support both beginning actors and those with some experience looking to strengthen their technique in a supportive, community setting.

Drawing inspiration from blues legends like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Buddy Guy, while blending in the soulful sounds of The Allman Brothers, The Grateful Dead, and R&B greats such as Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye, Slick Jr. & The Reactors deliver a sound that’s both timeless and refreshingly original. Hailing from Southwest Virginia, they’re a groovy little blues-boogie band that knows how to keep the music moving and the crowd locked in.
Four members of the band—Mike Greer, Kevin Plaster, Tom Turner, and Leland George Jr.—are former members of the roots jam band Joe Washrag and have been making music together for over 20 years. After Joe Washrag disbanded, the group continued to evolve, eventually landing on their passion for electric blues without being boxed into a single genre. The result is a dynamic live show filled with thoughtful songwriting, inventive covers, and free-form jams.
Often joined on stage by special musical friends they’ve gathered over the years, no two Slick Jr. & The Reactors shows are ever the same—each performance becomes a unique jam experience.

Committees include, but are not limited to, the Tourism Advisory Council, Economic Development Authority, Public Service Authority, Parks & Recreation Committee, Department of Social Services, Southern Area Agency on Aging, and the Planning Commission.
Residents who have ever wondered how to serve their community or influence local decision-making are encouraged to attend.

Fairy Stone State Park will host the Moonshine Hollow Hike. Walk in the footsteps of moonshiners of decades gone by. Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills and learn about the very interesting, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities -- Fridays, 10 a.m. at the Fairy Stone State Park Visitor Center. Guests will meet an interpreter at the Visitor Center then drive to the hike location. This hike is over steep, uneven terrain and is difficult. Learn how to make a functional, hand whisk broom with Erin Simons of Laurel Ridge Studios. In this workshop you will learn traditional broom making techniques required to craft one turkey wing whisk broom and one cake tester. Crafted to create a fan shape, Turkey Wing Whisks are great tools for cleaning all types of areas: desks, kitchen tables, workbenches, fireplaces, and more! Cake Testers are made from the cut off, so that no material is wasted.
Broomcorn, a variety of sorghum, is the essential natural material for household cleaning because it is delicate enough to catch hair and smaller debris while being strong enough to bend without breaking. We will discuss broom folklore, history, and care for longevity.
* Please keep in mind, broom making requires manual dexterity in both hands and feet. Participants should feel comfortable using a blunt knife and lighter. This workshop is considered beginner to medium level friendly and is for participants 13 and older. All materials and tools will be provided.

The Kibler Valley River Run is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2026. More information forthcoming regarding date time and cost. The Kibler Valley River Run is a 2-mile downriver race held annually on the head waters of the Dan River in Ararat, VA. Classes I and II for both canoe and kayak. Kibler Valley has an activity to match everyone’s interests whether guiding a kayak through the roaring whitewater or simply taking in the scenery of the Blue Ridge. Several hundred people gather along the headwaters of the Dan River for this event sponsored by the Red Bank Ruritan Club in Patrick County.
