Participants will meet monthly on the third Tuesday of each month (beginning October 2025), during business hours to tour a different locality across the county. Our annual October Fest is Saturday, October 11th at 10:00 am... put it on your calendar now so you don't miss it! Sometimes called the applebutter festival, and sometimes called the Woolwine reunion, our October Fest is always filled with good food, great bluegrass music, and ever better friends. This year featuring (in playing order):
- Jordan T Morrison & the Foothill Boys
- Larry Sigmon & the Virginia Girls
- The Friday Night Dance Band
Music starts at 10:00 am. The bands switch out roughly every hour at the top of the hour, and play until 4:00 pm. Held in our truck bays again this year everything is close, convenient, and on one level. There will be food (hotdogs, chicken BBQ, deserts, drinks and more), a bake sale, hopefully an item or two auctioned off, and also hopefully applebutter! We'll make as much as we can, but it is first spoken for, so if you would like to reserve yours contact your friendly neighborhood fireman to get on their list. Last year we had plenty for sale the day of the festival, and we have plans to make that much again.
We will have folding chairs available, or feel free to bring your favorite lawn chair so you can sit and tap your toes in comfort. Don't worry, if you want to dance we'll leave enough room for you to get up and swing your partner to your hearts content!
Bring your chair, bring your significant other, and bring your wallet - hey, this is a fundraiser after all!
We sure hope to see you there. For more information, call Goode at (276) 229-8241.

Murders over moonshine rocked the town of Fayerdale in the 1920s and 30s, leaving a dying town remembered for tragedy rather than the mining operations that once made it a boom town. Moonshining (illegal whiskey making) was quite prevalent in and around the Fairy Stone State Park area in the early 1900s. Jealousy, greed, and competition often led to feuds, brawls, and even killings. "Moonshine Murders" reveals the events which sparked a number of these murders.
Due to the gruesome nature of this topic, the program is recommended for ages 15 and older.

The Orionids meteor shower is an average meteor shower producing up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by dust grains left behind by comet Halley, which has been observed since ancient times. It peaks in 2025 on the night of October 21st and morning of the 22nd. This is an excellent year for the Orionids. The moon will be absent all night long, leaving dark skies for what should be an excellent show. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Orion but can appear anywhere in the sky.
Guests are welcome to join a ranger in the Upper Beach Parking Area to view the night sky. We recommend chairs or blankets for stargazing during this event because of the wide-open space.
This event may be cancelled if the forecast indicates overcast skies or rain.
We strive to make our programming and special event opportunities accessible and inclusive to all. If you have any concern, please reach out to our front office to speak with a ranger or contact us through the park email address. We will attempt to accommodate all individuals or families for their unique circumstances and can do so best with advanced communication.

Mabry Mill Update for 2025: The Mabry Mill restaurant is not operating in 2025, but the historic mill grounds have reopened after a significant roof replacement completed in August 2025. The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking a new concessionaire to operate the restaurant and gift shop, with new services expected to begin in January 2026. In the meantime, visitors can explore the historic mill, watch demonstrations like blacksmithing and weaving, and enjoy music on select Sundays. Status of the restaurant: Closed for 2025: The restaurant is not open for the 2025 season. New concession contract: The NPS is re-soliciting a concession contract to provide food, beverage, and retail services. Proposals are due soon, and a new operator is expected to be in place for services beginning January 1, 2026. Hope for reopening: The community and visitors hope for a restaurant to open soon, as it was a major tourism driver.

The Stuart Farmers’ Market is excited to get growing for the 2025 season. Market hours of operation for 2025 will be on Friday’s, 8 am to 12 pm, May through November. The season will officially kick off on Friday, May 3, however vendors will be on site Friday, April 18 and April 25 with what we call the “sneak peek Fridays.” Cool season crops of lettuce, kale, spinach, onions and broccoli, along with baked items, coffee and crafts will be available.
From May to November, every Friday will feature a variety of vendors with locally grown fruits and vegetables, homemade baked items, locally grown meats, eggs, plants and crafts. We will have vendors that can accept the Senior Nutrition vouchers.
We invite everyone to come to the market on our opening day, May 2 at 9am for a special dedication. Tom Bishop who many of our market patrons know as “the Birdhouse man” passed away this winter. We are honoring him by installing a birdhouse of his in the garden beds at the market.
The Patrick County Master Gardeners will be on site the last Friday of each month with information and to answer gardening questions. Our tool sharpening vendor will be on site the first Friday of every month to sharpen tools. So bring those dull blades and have them sharpened while you shop.

Our annual Red, White and Blueberries celebration will happen on Friday July 4th. Just the right day to celebrate and shop for your picnic essentials.

People Incorporated Financial Services has been awarded $300,000 through the Commonwealth’s Capital for Communities Fund (CCCF) to support and empower women entrepreneurs with accessible financial products and coaching. Funding will also support existing business lending and technical assistance across the agency’s 16 city and county service area. “This funding allows us to expand access to much-needed capital to historically underserved populations, including women-owned businesses and low-income community members,” said People Incorporated Director of Community Economic Development Stephanie Lillard. “Women entrepreneurs continue to face barriers to capital needed to grow or start their businesses, and we hope this funding will help break down walls and support the start-up and expansion of women-owned businesses across the commonwealth.” The Federal Reserve’s 2022 Small Business Credit Survey showed that women-owned businesses frequently encounter barriers to obtaining capital to support and grow their businesses. People Incorporated established People Incorporated Financial Services in 2000 to meet the financing needs of disadvantaged individuals and entrepreneurs in Southwest Virginia and has since expanded to serve the Northern Piedmont, Northern Shenandoah Valley and Greater Prince William regions with its loan products and financial services. People Incorporated is proud to be the only Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) headquartered in Southwest Virginia. Visit our website to learn more about our business loans and financial services or give us a call at 276-619-2297!

New EVOLVE Program Launching to Strengthen Nonprofit Leadership in Southern Virginia. South Boston, VA - July 23, 2025 - A new initiative launching this August aims to empower nonprofit leaders across Southern Virginia. The EVOLVE Nonprofit Program—short for Empowering Visionaries, Optimizing Leadership, and Valuing Excellence—offers nonprofit professionals the opportunity to build leadership skills, connect with peers, and strengthen their organizations.
Developed by the SOVA Innovation Hub in partnership with the Dan River Nonprofit Network and River District Consulting Group, the EVOLVE program includes two components: free.
EVOLVE nonprofit networking events and a paid six-session EVOLVE training series. The EVOLVE program was created in response to the need for professional development and peer connection among nonprofit leaders in rural Virginia. The program is open to nonprofit organization staff, board members, and volunteers from Halifax, Mecklenburg, Lunenburg, Charlotte, Brunswick, Pittsylvania, and surrounding counties.
The EVOLVE nonprofit networking events begin with the “EVOLVE Launch Party” on

Additional EVOLVE nonprofit networking events will be hosted throughout the year in partnership with the Dan River Nonprofit Network. These events are free to attend and do not require participation in the training series. These gatherings are designed to foster collaboration, resource-sharing, and relationship-building among local changemakers.
The EVOLVE training series starts in September 2025 and concludes in December 2025. The first and sixth sessions will be held in-person at the SOVA Innovation Hub in South Boston, VA.
Sessions two through five will be live, virtual sessions held on Zoom featuring guest facilitators who are subject matter experts in the nonprofit sector.
The training series will cover core topics including:
/Session 1: Setting the Foundation: Mission, Vision, and the Nonprofit Sector,
/ Session 2: Building Strong Foundations: Nonprofit Governance & Board Development,
/ Session 3: Money Matters: Fundraising, Grant Readiness, and Financial Management,
/ Session 4: People Power: Leading Teams & Managing with Purpose,
