One Person Killed in Plane Crash in Elkin, NC

February 4, 2008

Another person was killed in a separate plane crash in Elkin, NC on February 3, 2007. Just 2 days after 6 people being killed at the Mt. Airy, NC airport. Both crashes were in Surry County, NC.

One person was killed in a plane crash near the Elkin Municipal Airport, not far from where six people died in a plane crash earlier. Lawrence Darrell Proctor, 64, of 5104 Randleman Road, Greensboro, NC, was piloting an experimental fixed-wing, two-seat airplane when it crashed just after 5 p.m., just fifteen minutes after departing the Elkin airport with two other aircraft. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Warren Woodberry said Sunday that the cause of the crash wasn't known. He said one person was killed in the crash, and the plane was destroyed by fire. Elkin Airport Director Sandy Shore said the experimental two-seater crashed around 4:15 p.m. He said it was one of three planes that had departed from the airport about 15 minutes before the crash. Shore said each of the aircraft circled around the airport to wave to their friends shortly after they lifted off the runway. He said one lost control, while the other two aircraft landed safely. The names of the other pilots had not been released Sunday night. Six people died Friday when a plane crashed Friday at the Mount Airy airport, located about 25 miles away.
