Surry County, NC (neighboring county to Patrick County) jobless rate for July was 5.4%. In 2007, Mt. Airy production plants have laid off an estimated 1000 employees. It is believed that many of these who have lost jobs live in Virginia, which means their unemployment insurance claims would have been filed in their state of residence.
