Buffalo Mountain-Excellent Hiking Experience

Buffalo Mountain located in beautiful Floyd County, Virginia is an excellent outdoor experience for hiking, photography and nature study.

This picture was taken on August 28, 2007, by Tom Bishop, Executive Director of the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce. It was a breezy day at the top and partly overcast. At the beginning of the hike it was 78 degrees. Buffalo Mountain, elevation 3971 feet, is a rounded summit, shaped like the back of a buffalo, and stands well above the surrounding landscape and is subject to sub-alpine winds and temperature. Its shape can be seen clearly from the historic Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church. Buffalo Mountain is a Natural Area Preserve, managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Division of National Heritage. Uses for Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve are hiking, photography, and nature study. Prohibited are horse back riding, ATV riding, rock climbing collecting plants and animals, and rock collecting.
