Bowling Memorial Ride Raises $13,000-Patrick County, Virginia

For complete report, see the Martinsville Bulletin, May 1, 2011, page 1 By BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS - Debbie Hall Jonathan Bowling was remembered Saturday for dedicating his life to helping others. “Jon was a volunteer firefighter. He worked at the nursing home. He was a Martinsville Police officer. Jon was always doing something for someone else,� said Darrell Bowling, a retired master trooper with the Virginia State Police and Jon Bowling’s father. Darrell Bowling spoke Saturday during the Cpl. Jonathan Bowling Memorial Scholarship Ride in Stuart. About $13,500 was raised during the event to honor Jonathan Bowling, 23, a Marine who died in the Iraq war in January 2005. The ride, now in its seventh year, is a way to continue Bowling’s service to humanity, Darrell Bowling said. Proceeds go to a scholarship fund. In past years, one student attending Patrick Henry Community College in a human service field was awarded a scholarship from the fund, Darrell Bowling said. “This year, there will be two students� receiving help, he said. Background CPL Jonathan Bowling died of wounds received as result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to the Marine Corps Reserve's 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division, headquartered in Lynchburg, Virginia. He Died on January 26, 2005.
