VA Cooperative Extension Offers Food Preservation Courses

Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Patrick County Office is offering food preservation courses. Amanda Wingfield, Family and Consumer Sciences agent is planning food preservation workshops on May 10, June 24, and August 12.

Amanda Wingfield, Family and Consumer Sciences agent is planning food preservation workshops on May 10, June 24, and August 12. All workshops are planned from 1pm to 4pm at the local extension office in Stuart. During the workshops participants will be preserving a variety of items. Each date will focus on a different product. The May workshop: “Starting the Season� will be focusing on knowing your food preservation equipment, and making jams and jellies. The June workshop: “Points of Pressure� will be focusing on using a pressure canner, and canning seasonal fruits and vegetables. The August workshop: “Seasonal Harvest� will be using both hot water bath canning and pressure canning to produce seasonal products. If you have any interest in canning we would be happy to have you join us. From the least to the most experienced in canning, we hope everyone will enjoy this “hands on� workshop. If you would like to attend, please contact us to register at 694-3341. Each participant will take home preserved foods and a Ball Blue book, in addition to a wealth of information and possibly a door prize. The workshop will cost $25 and the registration deadlines are the Friday the week prior to the scheduled workshop. If you are in need of financial assistance to attend this workshop, please request a scholarship form, as we want to make sure anyone interested is able to attend.
