Board of Supervisors Approve School Budget-Set Tax Rates

March 30, 2011

The Patrick County Board of Supervisors met in March 30, 2011 and approved the County School Budget at level funding, thus not requiring them to make a 5% reduction. They set the tax rates for 2011-2012

Board of Supervisors Meeting March 30, 2011 Public Comment Period Several people made public comment on various subjects including County budget, tax rates, dog pound fees, school budget, County debt, etc. School Board Budget The Patrick County Board of Supervisors decided to leave the budget for the County Schools at level funding, thus reducing the amount of Contingency Fund. Motion was made by Dr. Lock Boyce and seconded by Karl Weiss. This passed with a unanimous vote. Setting Tax Rates The Board set the tax rate for the 2011-2012 Budget Year at 48 cents per $100 for real estate and the personal property /machine and tool rate at $1.71 per $100. The vote on this was unanimous approval. County Audit Deanna Cox from Farmer, Cox and Associates reviewed the Audit of County books for the period 2009-2010. Patrick County was given a “clean opinion� with no deficiencies. She said if they got a report like this two years in a row, they would be classified as a “low risk entity�. She was asked how much they recommended be in the Contingency Fund. Her answer was at least 10% of Recurring Expenditures. Buddy Dollarhite Day The Board voted to declare “Buddy Dollarhite Day� on April 2, 2011. Motion was made by Dr. Boyce and seconded by Crystal Harris. The motion passed unanimously. Buddy is the Fire Chief for Stuart and a leukemia patient. A special fund raiser is planned for him on April 2nd, to obtain bone marrow transplant volunteers. The Board went into Executive Session at 7:10 p. m. At 8:30 p. m. the Board came out of Executive Session and decided to assign Sam Perkins from Peters Creek District to the Patrick County Planning Commission. The vote was unanimous. The meeting adjourned at this point and the next meeting is set for Monday, April 11, at 6:00 p. m. and at that time will vote to approve/disapprove the 2011-2012 Budget. Reported by Tom Bishop
