DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bringing back memories of former Wood Brothers Hall of Famer David Pearson, 20-year-old Trevor Bayne held off Carl Edwards to win Sunday’s Daytona 500.
As Edwards, David Gilliland and Bobby Labonte battled among themselves to attempt a last-lap pass, Bayne remained out front of the melee and took the improbable win in just his second series start.
Bayne, who is running full time for the Nationwide Series title this season, is not even on board for a full Cup schedule for the Wood Brothers.
