Bill Goad Human Resources Consultant Interviewed by Celebrity Dialogue

February 18, 2011

Bill Goad is a senior human resource executive with more than 35 years of experience in the industry. He is a also certified executive coach.

Currently, Bill is the President of CMP-HR, an HR company that provides collaborative solutions to small IT companies and small to larg manufacturing concerns. CelebrityDialogue: Bill, please introduce your company, CMP-HR, to our viewers. Bill: CMP – HR was established in 2010 in Stuart, Virginia and provides human resources solutions to small IT Firms such as Parkway Technology Solutions to global leaders. CMP – HR consultants are experienced professionals who have worked “in the real world for many years prior to joining CMP – HR. Each CMP – HR consultant takes pride in providing fast, collaborative, and cost effective solutions to support your success. The President, Bill Goad, has over 35 years of experience as a HR Executive for several large companies, such as A. O. Smith, Rexnord, and SPX. I have a Masters in HR & OD, the SPHR Certification and I’m a Certified Executive Coach. CelebrityDialogue: How are you guys different from other HR consultants in the market? Bill: CMP – HR’s consultants are different. The stereotypical consultant will tell you how to solve your problems … or they will accept that you even know and understand your problem. Or, worse, they will assume that they fully understand your problem. At CMP – HR, we collaboratively explore – partner – with you in order to co-create solutions that truly meets your needs. That’s who we are; C = Collaborative; M = Mentoring; P = Partners. CelebrityDialogue: What kind of clientele do you have in terms of industry, geography and size? Bill: We specialize in small IT Technology Firms, MSP’s and medium to large manufacturing firms. We are nationwide, because a lot of our work can be done remotely with the webex – go to meeting tools that are there. Executive Coaching can be done from anywhere you have an internet connection. CelebrityDialogue: Are there any specific problems that your clients repeatedly face in terms of HR? Bill: The smaller companies cannot afford the services of an HR Executive, but having one on retainer, they can access at any time. The biggest problems that I have seen are performance issues and the need to terminate an employee. That’s where performance coaching comes into play and can turn around an employee’s performance. If that doesn’t happen, then we have a documented trail that keeps the company out of harms way when they terminate the employee. CelebrityDialogue: What are some of the personality traits that an excellent HR executive should have? Bill: I see this as someone who has Character, Integrity, and the ability to build strong Relationships and is collaborative. The Executive must be an expert in Human Resources and a true Business Partner to the CEO and fully understand the business and the markets the company serves. CelebrityDialogue: Can disgruntled employees be turned into most loyal assets? How? Bill: Yes and No. First, you need to understand why the employees are disgruntled. This can be done by conducting focus group meetings or by confidential employee surveys. If this is widespread throughout the organization, then there needs to be a change in the company culture. If the CEO is willing to make a shift in how the company treats their employees, then a gradual shift may occur and fewer employees will be disgruntled. Now if it is less than 5% of the workforce that is disgruntled, then performance coaching may turn some of them around, or maybe a mentor could be assigned to them to help them become more positive. A lot of times, employees do not see any future in their career growth with the company and this could be resolved by implementing career path charts to show a path to their ideal job. CelebrityDialogue: Is it possible for a top level HR executive to mentor each employee personally? How can the emotions, fears and problems of employees in large corporations be managed effectively? Bill: I think over the course of a year, each employee could be touched. One of the ways I have done this in the past was by having biweekly “breakfast with the VPHR/CEO meetings. This is a “town hall meeting that allows the employees to ask any question they have and for us to give feedback. We also have quarterly business updates will all employees at all locations. This helps relieve the fear and the candid information helps squelch the rumor mill. As far as doing 1 x 1 mentoring to everyone, it would be a difficult task if you had over 1000 employees. But if you do the things I mentioned, then you will build a lot of trust with all employees. CelebrityDialogue: Please tell us about your education and trainings. Bill: I have a BS Degree and a Master’s in HR & OD. I have a SPHR Certification and an Executive Coaching Certification. I also have 35 years of experience with Fortune 500 companies and have been exposed to a lot of Leadership Development CelebrityDialogue: What are the different specialties that you, personally, are expert in? Bill: I am an expert generalist in human resources; I am passionate about Leadership Development and Performance Management. I also excel in Executive Coaching. CelebrityDialogue: Thank you Bill. It was exciting to learn from you.
