Computer Based Crimes Are an Active Threat to Everyone who Uses a Computer. The Ararat and Willis Gap Community Watch groups, in partnership with the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office, are sponsoring a special presentation on October 28th

For Immediate Release: Ararat and Willis Gap Community Watch Presentation Scheduled -- Computer Based Crimes Are an Active Threat to Everyone who Uses a Computer The Ararat and Willis Gap Community Watch groups, in partnership with the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office, are sponsoring a special presentation on October 28th at 7:00 P.M. in the Ararat Ruritan building. Special Agent Shawn Rector from the Virginia State Police High Tech Crime Division will give an informative presentation about crime committed by use of a computer. Special Agent Rector is a computer crimes investigator who specializes in detecting and interdicting crimes whose perpetrators utilize computers and other communication technologies to prey upon the citizens of Virginia, and we are extremely fortunate to have him for this presentation. Unfortunately, computer-based on-line crime is extremely widespread and all too common. Citizens all across the United States, to include Patrick, Carroll, and Surry counties, regularly become victims of this type crime, and they usually lose thousands of dollars in each incident. Do you use a computer for shopping, email, or social networking? If so, you are a potential computer crime victim and you should attend this presentation to learn how these crimes work and how to protect yourself from them. These type crimes usually, but not always, originate outside of the United States and specifically target Americans. Criminals who commit and facilitate these crimes are seldom arrested. Participate in this meeting to learn why computer crime criminals are seldom prosecuted and gain the knowledge needed to protect yourself from computer crimes. This presentation is open to the public and citizens from all areas are invited to participate. You may contact Captain Ward Stone or Sheriff Dan Smith at the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office, 279-694-3161, for additional information. The Ararat Ruritan building is located at 4711 Ararat Hwy (SR773), Ararat, Virginia.
