Shelor Family History Reprinted A second edition of The Hills Touch Heaven, compiled by Leslie Shelor in 1997, has just been released through the on-line publishing service, www.lulu.com. Also known as "The Shelor Book", The Hills Touch Heaven is the story of the Shelor family and other connected lines from the early 1700's into the 20th century. A seven-year family project that included the work of many Shelor researchers and genealogists, the second edition of The Hills Touch Heaven features stories from the early years of the family history and memories of those who grew up during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. In 1990 representatives of several branches of the Shelor family came together and set as a goal the collection of all known genealogical information about the Shelor family and connecting surnames. This ongoing project has resulted in a vast database reflecting not only the history of the family but much information about the settlement of the regions they settled, particularly Floyd and Patrick Counties in Virginia. An earnest five year mission to collect as many family stories as possible began, culminating in two years of work arranging this collection into a narrative. "The timing was right for this project," commented Leslie Shelor about the book. "We were able to interview a lot of people that knew so much about the history of the families covered in the book. We were lucky in that Sue Jefferson Shelor of Floyd County had printed a smaller family history in 1938 called Pioneers and their Coats of Arms of Floyd County. I used her book as a jumping off point for mine." Leslie Shelor of Meadows of Dan, Virgnia, is a ninth generation descendant of Lawrence Shelor, the first known Shelor ancestor in America. She grew up surrounded by family stories, music and creative people and learned to appreciate the strengths of the mountain people descended from hardy German, Scotch-Irish and English stock. She still lives in Meadows of Dan on a family farm and operated Greenberry House, a local business near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Surnames in the book in addition to Shelor are Barnard, Terry, Graham, Goodson, Gardner, Cannaday, Webb and Reynolds, among others. The book is 257 pages long with over 160 family pictures in black and white with a comprehensive index of all proper names that appear in the text. Copies can be obtained at www.theshelorbook.com or in Floyd County from Nola Albert at 540-745-2835 or in Patrick County from Leslie Shelor at Greenberry House in Meadows of Dan; 276-952-2444.
