Sen. Webb Says Massachusetts Election A Referendum on Health Care

Virginia Sens. Mark Warner and Jim Webb, both Democrats, on Wednesday issued statements urging the Senate not to take further votes on legislation to reform health care until after Brown is seated as a member.
“I believe a complete economic recovery, including deficit reduction, will not be possible until we reform our expensive and inefficient health care system, and I hope we can move forward in a bipartisan way,� Warner said.
Webb said, however, that “in many ways, the campaign in Massachusetts became a referendum not only on health care reform but also on the openness and integrity of our government process.�
“It is vital,� he added, “that we restore the respect of the American people in our system of government and in our leaders� by deferring further health care legislation votes until after Brown takes office.
Brown’s election stripped Senate Democrats of a 60-vote majority needed to pass health care reform legislation sought by President Obama but so far unanimously opposed by Republican senators.
