Virginia Roads clogged-Portions of Interstate Highways closed

December 19, 2009

Dec. 19-8:00pm Portions of I-81 and I-77 in Virginia were closed due to accidents and snow storm. One driver killed in Carroll County, VA a car overturned and slid down an embankment.

Here is the latest from Virginia State Police in a statement released shortly after noon Saturday: "From 6 a.m. Friday through 12 p.m. Saturday, Virginia State Police statewide have responded to more than 4,000 calls for service to include traffic crashes and disabled vehicles. From midnight Saturday through noon Saturday, state police statewide have responded to more than 1,800 traffic crashes and disabled vehicles." One driver in Carroll County was killed when her car overturned after sliding down an embankment. Conditions sound just terrible in the Shenandoah Valley: "The worst stretches of I-81 are in the more mountainous stretches – Buffalo Creek in Rockbridge County (187-195 mile markers) and Christiansburg Mountain in Montgomery County (118-130 mile markers). Stoppages continue to occur with recurring traffic crashes in the travel lanes. This information came into our newsroom from VDOT: "Portions of Interstate 81 remain closed after serious overnight accidents have blocked the roadway and hindered snow-removal efforts. Portions of I-77 near the West Virginia border have also been closed sporadically through the night and day due to accidents and weather-related impacts."
