“Reynolda House in Winter The Reynolds Homestead, along with the Patrick County Historical Society, invites you to join us for the monthly program of “The History around Us on Wednesday, November 4, at 12:00 noon. This brown bag luncheon event lasts one hour and focuses on the historic sites in our region. This month’s featured speaker is Phil Archer, Director of Public Programs for Reynolda House, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, who will be talking about the holiday observances celebrated in this lovely museum. Reynolda House, now connected to Wake Forest University, was the 1917 home of Patrick County native, industrialist R. J. Reynolds and his wife Katharine Smith Reynolds. The forty-five room, four floor residence, has original furnishings throughout the main level and clothing and children’s toys belonging to the two generations of the Reynolds family who lived there. Recreational facilities on the lower level include a vintage 1930s bowling alley and swimming pool. The 2005 Babcock wing features in orientation gallery, auditorium, changing exhibition gallery and a museum store. The house, a National Historic Property, has a superb collection of American art throughout -- with paintings, sculpture and prints dating from 1755 to the present. The original Reynolda House estate consisted of 1,067 acres, which included a lake, a model farm, as well as one of the most modern dairies in the country at that time. 28 of the original thirty buildings remain, many serving as shops, boutiques, and restaurants. Reynolda Gardens are well-known for their beauty and educational opportunities – a concept carried out by the dedication of Katharine Reynolds to furthering the knowledge of farmers and all people in the Winston-Salem area. The story of Reynolda House is uniquely a continuation of our own history here at the Reynolds Homestead in Critz, Virginia. Groups are welcome to attend, and everyone is encouraged to bring a lunch and join us for this fascinating program. Hope to see you here!
