Yellow Tavern-Where J. E. B. Stuart was mortally wounded

Pictured here is a historical sign placed near U. S. Route 1 and Interstate 95, North of Richmond, VA, where Maj. Gen. J. E. B. Stuart made his last ride in the Civil War.

Gen. Stuart was wounded on May 11, 1864 and died the next day in the Battle of Yellow Tavern.
He was born Feb. 6, 1833, at Laurel Hill, in Ararat, VA (Patrick County)
Pvt. John A. Huff of the 5th Michigan Calvary fired the shot that killed Gen. Stuart.
Stuart was carried by ambulance to the home of Dr. Charles Brewer, bother-in-law where he died on the evening May 12, 1864.
He was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.
A monument was placed nearby by veterans of Stuart's calvary in 1888.
