Musical Styles Along the Crooked Road Traveling Exhibit Opens in April
Southwest Virginians are known to have a good ear for music, and this second new exhibit from The Crooked Road group opening at The Historic Star Theatre showcases the long history of picking and singing in the mountains. Musical Styles Along the Crooked Road is a brand new traveling exhibit which opens April 10th through April 30th.
Both of these traveling exhibits, Musical Styles Along the Crooked Road and Crooked Road Royalty will tour to numerous venues in Southwest Virginia and around the country in the coming years. Crooked Road Royalty show was a big success with Patrick County visitors to the Star Theatre in February, 2009. The exhibits have been produced by the Blue Ridge Institute & Museum, for the Crooked Road: Virginias Heritage Music Trail, with funding from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification & Community Revitalization Commission.
Musical Styles Along the Crooked Road presents the rich variety of roots music western Virginians sing and playfiddle and banjo tunes, bluegrass, ballads of love and death, sentimental mountain songs, blues, and gospel. The exhibit includes rare film footage and photographs of historic Crooked Road musicians.
The story of American traditional music is filled with singers and pickers from the Crooked Road region, says Andrew Pauly, exhibit researcher. Even todays young country music stars know songs that were first recorded by the early Southwest Virginia artists.
Musical Styles Along the Crooked Road exhibit runs April 10th through April 30th at The Historic Star Theatre in downtown Stuart, VA. The theater will be open during the WHEO Jamboree from 10AM 2PM April 18thand during regular weekly business hours, Carol Beasley will offer a tour of the exhibit For more information individuals and groups may call Carol at 276-694-7064.
