Mt. Valley Holds Ribbon Cutting for its first resident home

February 12, 2009

Feb. 12-DOBSON—It might have taken a little longer than expected, but the doors of Surry County’s first resident hospice home finally opened Wednesday morning.

Close to 200 people flooded into the 22,000-square-foot facility after a ribbon cutting ceremony for a grand tour and refreshments. Visitors were able to see the 20 patient suites, two large family rooms, a theater, an old time soda shop, a children’s playroom, mediation garden, a patient salon and spa that make-up the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home at 945 Zephyr Road in Dobson, NC. “I am still very excited, it’s a dream come true, said Denise Watson, the executive director of the Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, which will operate the home. “The turnout is exceptional, I’ve heard nothing but positive comments about the home which means we did it right. We put the facility together to meet the needs of families and patients. We want it to be a home away from home. It’s not easy to come to a hospice home—dying is not easy and we want the patients to have a place of peace and dignity. We expected to have it opened sooner but I’m relieved to finally see it open. The effort to meet Surry County and the surrounding area’s critical need for hospice care with a residence home was a four-year journey, Watson said.
