Boucher outlines rebate eligibility

Taxpayers, senior citizens and disabled veterans are eligible for rebate payments recently approved in an economic stimulus plan.
According to U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, more than 130 million families, including 35 million families who work but make too little to pay income taxes, will receive rebate checks.
The plan also provides rebate checks to disabled veterans and seniors, with payments ranging from $300-$600 for individuals and $600-$1,200 for joint filers, according to Boucher.
To be eligible, a valid Social Security number (SSN) is required, and a 2007 tax return must be filed. Joint filers both must have valid Social Security numbers.
Persons who file taxes using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number (ATIN) or other identification number issued by the IRS are not eligible, according to Boucher.
Individuals who pay no tax and have less than $3,000 of qualifying income also are not eligible for the rebates.
Those who can be claimed as a dependent on another individual’s tax return also are not eligible.
