Toxic Spill At Brintle's Travel Plaza-Mt. Airy, NC

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. Hazmat crews brought in from Charlotte spent most of the night Thursday cleaning up a toxic spill at Brintles Travel Plaza off Highway 89 in Surry County.
Authorities said a truck driver noticed liquid leaking from a tanker around 7 p.m.
"When we got on the scene we found out we had a substance call alaline, which is a carcinogen," said Surry County EMS Director John Shelton. "It's extremely hazardous for inhalation or skin contact and very volatile when mixed with some substances."
Aniline is used to make polyurethane, authorities said.
The truck had 45,000 pounds of the chemical on-board.
"We're trying to take every precaution possible when dealing with the substance here," Shelton said.
More than 100 people had to be evacuated from the vicinity while crews cleaned up.
