Dan Smith, age 35, Martinsville Police officer, was elected as Patrick County's new sheriff Tuesday in a tight race.

Smith received 2758 votes, edging out current Patrick County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Garry Brown, who got 2077. Former VA State Police Master Trooper Darrell Bowling was running a write-in candidate and received 1659 votes. Source of information: Martinsville Bulletin, November 7, 2007
