Buffalo Mountain, elevation 3971 feet, is a rounded summit, shaped like the back of a buffalo, and stands well above the surrounding landscape and is subject to sub-alpine winds and temperature.
Buffalo Mountain is a Natural Area Preserve, managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Division of National Heritage.
Uses for Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve are hiking, photography, and nature study. Prohibited are horse back riding, ATV riding, rock climbing collecting plants and animals, and rock collecting.
