Source: Martinsville Bulletin Thursday, July 26, 2012 Demolition crews from North Carolina began tearing down the remains of the Meadows of Dan Elementary School on Wednesday, about 11 months after it was destroyed by fire. Cyndi Williams, coordinator of federal grant programs for the Patrick County School Division, said the crews began about 12:30 p.m. By 3:30 p.m., about 75 percent of the front of the former school on U.S. 58 was demolished, she said. An electrical fire destroyed the more-than-70-year-old structure two days after classes started last Aug ust. Only about $50,000 worth of contents of the building was salvageable, Schools Superintendent Roger Morris has said. Construction of a new 26,000-square-foot school is expected to begin this fall and be completed within 14 months, he said. The size of the new school is about 2,500 square feet larger than the original structure, mainly to comply with state guidelines and code requirements, Morris has said. The 120 students in prekindergarten through seventh grade were housed in mobile classrooms for the school year. Those units will be used until the new school is built.
