Red Cross Supported 27 Cooling Shelters In VA Mountains
July 5, 2012
See Message from American Red Cross: Your Red Cross has supported 27 cooling shelters throughout Virginia Mountain Region
Last night in the Red Cross Emergency Shelter at the Roanoke Civic Center, the youngest guest was 17 days old. The oldest…99 years old. Imagine being a young mother with a new born baby and nowhere to turn. Think for a moment about being nearly 100 with no electricity and no food or water in this heat.
Thanks to you,
· Your Red Cross has supported 27 cooling shelters throughout Virginia Mountain Region;
· During our response, we opened 9 Red Cross Emergency Shelters open all across our region in Roanoke, Daleville, Hot Springs, Covington, Galax, Lynchburg, Charlottesville, Rocky Mount and Dublin;
· Shelters will continue to be open in impacted areas until power is restored. 481 guests have found comfort in overnight shelters through last night.
· Through July 4, we have served 3,065 meals, 7802 snacks and water, and provided 1,577 comfort kits.
· On Monday, July 2, we worked with the Virginia Baptist Men’s Group to establish a mobile kitchen in Bath County to provide up to 2,000 meals a day for Bath, Alleghany and Highland Counties, some of our hardest hit areas.
· 131 volunteers have supported our local Red Cross efforts around the clock since last Friday evening.
Through last night, approximately $40,000 has been raised to support these efforts. SunTrust Banks and AEP both made $10,000 gifts to support Red Cross Disaster Relief. Cox Communications gave $1,500 and Bank of the James gave another $2,000. Today we have a strong team of volunteers and staff giving up their July 4th Holiday to be there for all who need us…from 17 days old to 99 years old.
Thanks to each of you for making our work possible,
Lee
