Source: Martinsville Bulletin Wreck victim ID not known Trooper asks for public's help Thursday, May 17, 2012 By DEBBIE HALL - Bulletin Staff Writer The identity of a Hispanic male injured Tuesday when the Ford Taurus he was driving plummeted 150 feet down a mountainside off U.S. 58 remained unknown Wednesday. Virginia State Police Trooper P.W. Meade said Wednesday afternoon that authorities had been unable to locate anyone who knew the name of the male who was involved in the accident around 5 p.m. Tuesday near Lover’s Leap in Patrick County. The man’s condition also was not known, he added. “Apparently, he hadn’t been here (in the area) very long,” Meade said. The man is thought to have borrowed the Ford Taurus from someone in Martinsville, but Meade said only nicknames were used. “We can’t seem to locate anybody who knows his name,” the trooper said. Meade said the man “is still listed as Patient X” at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he was flown for treatment Tuesday evening. It took a total of three hours to extricate the driver, haul the car back to the road and clear the scene after the crash, authorities have said. It appeared that the driver, who was traveling eastbound, ran onto the shoulder of the road, lost control of the vehicle and plunged through the guardrail and over the side of the mountain, Meade has said. The incident occurred about 21?2 miles west of Route 640, and less than one mile east of Lover’s Leap, the well-known scenic overlook.
