Walter Clarence Payne, 73, of Ferrum, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
He was born in Danville on May 16, 1938, to Worth Clarence and Martha Junia Cain Payne.
He served in the Navy for 10 years and was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Suffolk.
Payne had been the owner/operator of Deer Run Campground for 23 years, and he was a member of the VFW in Hillsville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William Lon Payne and Kenneth Augusta Payne.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Julie V. Carroll Payne of the home; two sons, Walter Lee Payne Sr. of Suffolk and Timothy Scott Payne of Woolwine; one daughter, Cynthia Lynn Gay of Suffolk; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and two brothers, Ervin Wayne Payne of Slidell, La., and Archie Edward Payne of Danville.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating.
The family will receive friends for one hour before the service Friday at the funeral home.
Entombment will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Meadow Brook Memorial Gardens, 4569 Shoulders Hill Road, Suffolk, with the Rev. Ronnie Wiggins officiating.
