The Dan River Basin Association (DRBA) and the Patrick County Rivers and Trails Group (PCRTG) will hold a river clean-up along the Mayo River and Commerce Street adjacent to the Mayo River Rail Trail (MRRT) on Saturday, February 18, 2012. Work will begin at 9:30 am near the T.J. George Memorial Bridge in downtown Stuart and follow the river downstream to the MRRT terminus. Trash bags will be provided and a canoe will be available to ferry debris. The PCRTG is a DRBA committee of local community leaders working to coordinate the growing efforts of our local government as it works to develop Patrick County into a vibrant community with citizens interested in developing and maintaining our recreational amenities. A united effort to share information about programs related to community viability, health care, trail development, parks and recreation, tourism and employment opportunities will create a more efficient use of resources while developing a greater sense of community and enhancing our recreational opportunities. The public is invited to participate in this community effort. Bring protective gloves, dress for the weather and rendezvous at the MRRT Trailhead kiosk in the Downtown Depot terminus on Commerce Street (formerly the Pannill parking lot). Flyers with the latest information about the clean-up will be posted on the kiosks at both ends of the MRRT. In the event of inclement weather, please listen to WHEO radio, 1270AM or contact Wayne Kirkpatrick at 276.694.4449.
