With a wide-ranging group of inductees — two three-time champions in NASCAR's premier series (one a renowned TV personality), the king of a grass-roots series, the sport's greatest mechanic and a legendary car owner — the ballroom adjacent to the sport's shrine in uptown Charlotte was filled with tales of the commitment, passion and sacrifice needed to reach what Cale Yarborough called, "the top step of a big, tall ladder."
Family was a recurring theme throughout the ceremony, and Yarborough, who was enshrined with Darrell Waltrip, Glen Wood, Dale Inman and Richie Evans, delivered one of the night's most memorable tributes by saluting his wife, Betty Jo, for "putting up with me" for 53 years.
