Joshua “JB� Kerns, 21, of Ararat was injured 4/7/11 by an improvised explosive device (IED). He was a combat engineer on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan. He and other members of his unit stopped their Hummer to conduct a mine sweep in a safety zone. They said they believed JB was beginning to kneel down to work on a device when the blast occurred. Kerns lost both of his legs from the knee down and lost his right arm from the elbow down. His left arm was broken in at least 2 places. JB is currently in the hospital in Bethesda, MD. The Joshua B. Kerns benefit fund was created to help the family with travel and related expenses while they are out of work and in Maryland with their son.
