Congressman Morgan Griffith Makes Public Appearance in Stuart, VA

April 21, 2011

April 19-Morgan Griffith, U. S. Representative from Salem, VA and our 9th district congressman made a stop in Stuart, VA on Tuesday, April 19 at the Rotary Building.

He gave a short speech and fielded questions from press and general public. The press on hand included: The Enterprise, WHEO News, SuperCountry 99 News, the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce, and the Martinsville Bulletin. He spoke of his efforts to make America better for his children and control spending in Washington and reduce the Federal deficit. He told the audience of his voting against the Continuing Resolution recently addressed by the U. S. House This week Congress passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the government through the remainder of fiscal year 2011. Congressman Griffith said after much deliberation, he made the decision to vote against the bill. While this CR is a step in the right direction and cuts nearly $40 billion, he was not comfortable with the overall size of the cuts. He said he voted for the “Ryan Plan which he thinks is the best effort out there to cut spending. In a recent press release he made this statement: “The Ryan budget passed the House today (April 15) with my support. This budget serves as a blueprint for the appropriations bills that ultimately fund the government and sets a hard limit for spending. While the Continuing Resolution was a small step, this budget is a stride in the right direction. The spending debate has shifted from cutting billions to trillions; a direction in which we should be going. We have got to stop spending money we do not have. He brought out a chart titled, “Crushing Burden of Debt As a share of our economy, showing the scary situation leading up to years 2070-2080, to illustrate his point of the threat to our National Security. He committed himself to come back to Patrick County again soon. This report written by Tom Bishop, Executive Director, Patrick County Chamber of Commerce.
