September 13, 2010

Sept. 13, 2010. At the monthly meeting of the Patrick County Board of Supervisors meeting in Stuart, VA, County Administrator, Jay Scudder announced his resignation.

Jay Scudder-County Administrator Resigns At their monthly meeting the Patrick County Board of Supervisors went into Executive Session to discuss personnel matters. At the conclusion of the Executive Session, they came back in session and announced Jay Scudder, County Administrator, had turned in his resignation and by contract had given a 60 day notice and that it may be less than 30 days. Board Chairman, Karl Weiss reported that this was a total surprise to all the Board members. They had no prior notice of this. Just prior to the meeting, Jay requested they add to the agenda an Executive Session to discuss personnel matters. Content of Jay Scudder’s Resignation Letter Date: September 13, 2010 Addressed to: Mr. Karl Weiss, Chairman of the Patrick County Board of Supervisors Dear Chairman Weiss, During the past few months I have been evaluating my professional goals as the County Administrator for Patrick County and the goals of the County. I have had much to contemplate; we have had so many achievements and established many positive relationships for the future. Also, I feel tied to many of the projects that are yet to be started and those that are on-going. Therefore, it has been a very difficult decision to reach, that I am formally resigning my position as County Administrator. My preference would be for this to be effective no later than October 27, 2010. Our current contract has a 60 day period upon providing written notice, which would be on November 11, 2010. I am at your pleasure in that regard. Please be assured that this decision does not reflect my high opinion of the Staff, Community and the Patrick County Board. Over the past few years we have worked through many challenges as friends, professionals and colleagues. I firmly believe your decisions have not only accomplished what needed to be done, but place Patrick County in an improved position for the future. I am proud to have played a role in those processes. My service to Patrick County has been enjoyable and I will hold many fond memories and friendships from my time here. The people of Patrick County have heart and soul. I want to thank you for the opportunity in serving as your Administrator. As you transition towards filling the County Administrator position, I will make myself available if you need my services at any time. There are many irons in the fire with the numerous projects that are in the works and I do not wish for progress to be interrupted during this time. Being familiar with the hiring processes for administrative positions in local governments I can offer some professional practices and firms that help with the processes if desired. Again, this has not been an easy decision to reach, best for the future. Jay Scudder. As Reported by the Martinsville Bulletin on May 2, 2008 His hiring was announced at that date. By DEBBIE HALL - Bulletin Staff Writer The Patrick County Board of Supervisors has selected Jay Scudder as the new county administrator. "William P. “Jay Scudder Jr., 49, the director of planning in Gloucester County, will assume the post in early June. "The Patrick County Board of Supervisors interviewed the top three applicants, and “he prevailed, Rose said. Scudder will succeed Craig Teller, who agreed to serve as interim county administrator after former county administrator Mike Burnette resigned last year. Teller’s last day on the job will be May 12."
