Board of Supervisors Meeting - August 23-2010

The following news report concerning the Monday night Board of Supervisors Meeting in Stuart, VA, as reported by Tom Bishoip

Board of Supervisors Meeting on August 23, 2010 As reported by Tom Bishop Public Comment Period Only one person made public comment. Chairman Karl Weiss on Vacation Due to Karl Weiss being on vacation the meeting was Chaired by Crystal Harris of the Smith River District. Resolutions The Board passed 3 resolutions without any dissenting votes. They were: 1. Approval of the 2010-2011 Piedmont Community Services Performance Contract with the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Retardation and Substance Abuse Services. 2. Resolution for Free Hunting and Fishing License for Disabled Veteran’s for both in and out of state veterans ( to be sent to the State Legislature). 3. Resolution concerning the 75th Anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The following resolution passed on a 3-1 vote with Roger Hayden voting no: Approval of the Personal Property Relief Act (PPTRA) (No Car tax) resolution to set the percentage of computation at 51% for allocation of PPTRA relief to county citizens at a specific amount to be offset against total taxes otherwise due. Board Appointment: Gretna Payne was appointed to the Social Services Board by Dr. Lock Boyce representing the Peters Creek District to a 4 year term. The Board approved this unanimously. Blue Ridge Parkway Celebration. Tom Bishop was named to be the Patrick County Honor Representative at the 75 Year Parkway Celebration on the weekend of Sept. 11, 1010 at Cumberland Knob Visitor Center and the Blue Ridge Parkway Music Center. He will have the honor of participating in the on-stage “Community Roll Call� and presenting commemorative items to the Parkway. He will be given 5 minutes to describe what makes the Parkway special to our community. Jay Scudder reported that the seepage at the Transfer Station had been repaired according to the requirements of the Department of Environmental Quality. Jay Scudder announced the November 7-9 VACO Annual Conference Public Hearing - 7:00pm Donnie Conner made comments recommending passage of this resolution. Passed a resolution without opposition, to abandon the road adjacent the Dobyn’s Primitive Baptist Church (a portion of Old Route 631). This property can now be used by the church to build a new addition. Adjourned at 7:05 P. M. Next Board meeting will be on Sept. 13 at 6:00pm
