During the first snowstorm the area has seen in a number of years, on Dec. 18, 520 wrecks were reported in a 24-hour period. Now, local officials are preparing for more winter storms and ways to better handle them when they do come.
John Shelton, director of Surry County Emergency Services, said he sat down last week with officials from the N.C. Department of Transportation and the N.C. Highway Patrol to talk about how to better handle future storms.
“We are trying to strategize for the next storm, if we have another. This seems to be the storm year, so we will probably have another. Every time we experience an event, the heads all come to the table to see if we can do anything better than what we did before, Shelton said.
