Gov. Tim Kaine reported on the impact of Tourism in VA for 2008 that supports 210,620 jobs and $19.2 billion in revenue. It continues to remain strong.
GOVERNOR KAINE ANNOUNCES ANNUAL ECONOMIC IMPACT OF TOURISM
~ Tourism generated $19.2 billion in revenue and 210,620 jobs in 2008
RICHMOND–Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced the annual economic impact figures for tourism in Virginia. Tourism, one of Virginia’s largest industries, generated $19.2 billion in revenue, supported 210,620 jobs and provided $1.28 billion in state and local tax revenue in 2008.
“The 2008 figures show that the Virginia tourism industry continues to remain strong, even during a historic economic downturn,� Governor Kaine said. “Our state takes great pride in showcasing our history, natural beauty and culture to millions of visitors each year, who in turn provide a great benefit to Virginia’s economy.�
Virginia receives its annual economic impact data from the U.S. Travel Association. The information is based on visitor spending from per person trips taken 50 miles or more away from home. Revenue from tourism in Virginia increased 2.8 percent over 2007.
“Our industry is not immune to the tough economic times which have affected some localities and destinations harder than others,� said Alisa Bailey, President and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation. “We do believe that Virginia stands to benefit from the trend of travelers looking to take closer-in vacations. Virginia’s location within a day’s drive of 60 percent of the U.S. population makes the state even more appealing for budget-conscious visitors.�
Virginia’s tourism industry continues to have good news to celebrate. 2009 is the 40th anniversary of Virginia is for Lovers, making it America’s longest-running state tourism slogan. Forbes.com recently named Virginia is for Lovers as one of the top ten tourism marketing campaigns of all time. Currently, the slogan is in the running to be added to the National Advertising Walk of Fame on Madison Avenue.
