From Dr. Roger Morris, Supt. Patrick County Schools:
It is my sad duty to report to you that Lt. Leevi Khole Barnard, who was a resident of the Ararat area, was killed in action defending his country. Lt. Barnard served with distinction in the military and was, according to sources, on his third tour in Iraq. Lt. Barnard went to Blue Ridge Elementary School and graduated from Patrick County High School. He was a member of the Class of 1998. It is difficult to imagine the loss to our community, particularly at a time of remembering our fallen soldiers.
In reviewing the directive from the Governor of Virginia regarding the lowering of the flag, “the home locality of any Virginia Military personnel that dies while serving on active duty may lower to half-staff federal, state, and local flags in their memory until interment. As Superintendent, I am ordering that the flags at all of the schools in Patrick County be lowered to half-staff until interment, effective immediately. I am also requesting that Tuesday’s Moment of Silence period at the schools be dedicated in his memory. If staff members have questions, please let us know.
