March 30, 2009

series of free workshops in leadership, technology, problem-solving, critical thinking and communication will be offered by Patrick Henry Community College during the month of May

April 30, 2009 A series of free workshops in leadership, technology, problem-solving, critical thinking and communication will be offered by Patrick Henry Community College during the month of May. The workshops, offered in the morning and in the afternoon, will be held at the main campus in Martinsville as well as the off-campus sites in Patrick County and Franklin County. Topics for the workshops were decided upon based on a survey of community members conducted by PHCC’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education department. The purpose was dual-fold, according to Brenell Thomas, program coordinator. “We want to give something to the community by way of thanks for their support, and to offer an opportunity for people to see what we can offer, she said. Although the workshops are free, pre-registration is required due to limited seating. Those interested can call 276-694-8778. Participants can choose to attend from 8-9:30 a.m. or 5:30-7 p.m. on each day. The first week of May, the Leadership workshop will be offered on Monday, May 4 at the Patrick County Site, Tuesday, May 5 on the main campus in Philpott Hall room 141, and on Thursday, May 7 at the Franklin County Site. The workshop will be led by David Dickerson, managing principal of Business Results Training, LLC, an expert trainer with more than 20 years of business experience. He has developed and delivered both hands-on instruction for operators and leadership programs for front-line staff, supervisors, senior managers and executives to increase their productivity and effectiveness. This workshop will include a self-awareness inventory, education and exercise on maintaining or enhancing team members’ self-esteem to improve productivity, an exercise to help team leaders focus on behavior not attitude, and exercises to help team leaders deal with facts instead of opinions and to encourage participation and open communications. The remaining workshops in the series will be offered during the week of May 18 (Problem Solving and Critical Thinking) and May 25 (Communication). A Technology Fair has been scheduled for the week of May 11 at each site, with focus on social networking.
