Covered Bridge Festival Celebrated on June 21st

June 22, 2008

The Annual Coverd Bridge Festival was celebrated on June 21, 2008 at Woolwine, VA in beautiful Patrick County, Virginia

From the Martinsville Bulletin on June 22, 2008: "Though they have seen the better part of a century, the bridges proved they can still draw a crowd. Hundreds of locals and tourists alike turned out for music, food and a walk through history on Saturday, sponsored by the Woolwine Ruritan, Fire and Rescue. Patrick County is home to two of only eight remaining covered bridges in Virginia, and they sit within a couple miles of each other off Route 8. Jack’s Creek was built in 1914, and Bob White followed in 1921." "Also at the Jack’s Creek bridge was a group of Confederate re-enactors from the Stuart-Hairston Camp of Martinsville. They had to put away their cannon when the rain started, said Cmdr. Raymond Sayers, but they pulled it out again and fired it at the end of the day. Some people stopped by a third, newer covered bridge that sits on private land near Jack’s Creek off Woolwine Highway. Benny Wood owns the Clifford Wood bridge, built by his father in 1977 in the style of the historic bridges."
